Summary & key words

Chapter 1.3

« The need to feed the surging global population has found a sustainable production alternative in aquiculture. Furthermore, this industry must safeguard an adequate supply of protein to feed its fish. Fish meal is a protein-rich product, currently used to feed farm animals, poultry and fish. Nevertheless, performance of the fish meal industry has its own competitiveness and sustainability risks. This chapter focuses on identifying opportunities to generate shared value amongst companies, society and the environment in terms of the processes in fishing and manufacturing of fish meal and its supply chain, on its effort to increase competitiveness (SDG 12), to follow sustainability practices in its operation (SDG 14), while maintaining one of the sources of protein for human nutrition (SDG 2) with efficient institutions (SDG 16). This research’s approach is descriptive-exploratory, and it is quantitative. Final results include specific proposals to generate shared value amongst companies and society with regard to productivity, contamination of consumables, transportation and environment. »
