Summary & key words
Transnational corporations have profited enormously from investment subsidies, tax breaks and deregulated labour markets. Today, they dominate the global economy, controlling some 80 per cent of world trade through their own operations and those of their business partners, organised in global value chains. These webs of power have fragmented the workplace and become the factories of the 21st century. Trade unions require bold new approaches to fight the power of Transnational Corporations. To protect the rights of workers and represent their fundamental interests, unions need to secure their local and national power base within and along global value chains.
