Summary & key words
The construction of a mode of sustainable development and that of socially responsible corporations able to participate in this effort is today, a project generally agreed upon. But how to achieve it? The answers to that question remain diverse and it seems essential to clarify and debate them, so that the actors of CSR (and researchers in this domain) can better position their intervention. If no consensual definition of CSR has been constructed, it is not due to a lack of conceptualization. It is because CSR constitutes a highly contested field. On the basis of an exploration of the discourses from the literature on CSR, taking into account political and anthropological debates, we distinguish four broad conceptions concerning the development of the responsibility of corporations, but also that of the economy, the system of production and consumption as a whole.
